Get Creative for the Made in Iowa Scarecrow Contest!
The Iowa Scarecrow Festival is just around the corner — and this year, anything goes when it comes to creativity! Your scarecrow doesn’t need to stand tall in a field. It can sit in a chair, hang from a tree, or even be tiny enough to perch on a windowsill.
One of the best parts about making scarecrows? You can build them using stuff you already have lying around — and yes, I love to stuff mine with old plastic grocery bags! Not only does it keep them light and easy to shape, it’s a fun way to recycle.
Here are a few easy tips to get your scarecrow contest-ready:

1. Think Outside the Cornfield
Your scarecrow doesn’t have to be life-sized or even upright. Consider:
-
A sitting scarecrow in a lawn chair or bench
-
A hanging scarecrow swinging from a tree branch or shepherd’s hook
-
A mini scarecrow for a tabletop or flower pot
Creativity counts — so dream big (or small)!

2. Build a Basic Frame (Optional!)
For standing or sitting scarecrows, a simple frame helps:
-
Cross two sticks or dowels in a “T” shape
-
Use wire or zip ties for joints
-
For hanging scarecrows, you might just need string, twine, or a hanger!

3. Dress for Fun
Old clothes work perfectly:
-
Overalls, flannel shirts, jeans, dresses — anything goes!
-
Accessories like scarves, hats, sunglasses, or even jewelry can bring your scarecrow to life.

4. My Secret Stuffing Tip: Plastic Bags!
Forget straw. I like to stuff my scarecrows with clean plastic grocery bags. Here’s why:
-
They’re lightweight and easy to mold
-
No mess or bugs like you might get with hay or straw
-
It’s a great way to reuse what you already have
Bonus Tip: If you want your scarecrow to feel soft and squishy, use fabric scraps or old towels inside instead.

5. Add a Head with Personality
Scarecrow heads can be:
-
A stuffed pillowcase or shirt
-
A decorated pumpkin (real or faux)
-
A bucket, flower pot, or even a stuffed sock!
Draw or sew on the face, or glue on buttons, yarn, and felt.

6. Don’t Forget the Flair!
Make yours stand out with:
-
Signs, props, or handmade accessories
-
A theme — funny, spooky, elegant, or farm-chic
-
Matching mini scarecrows or a scarecrow “family”
